Let us know everything about the Rashtrapati Bhavan situated on Raisina Hills of Delhi which makes this huge building so grand and important. Rashtrapati Bhavan is not only a building but also a symbol of freedom struggle.
Why was this building built?
Actually, before independence, India was ruled by the British. The British rule had made Kolkata its capital at that time. But in 1911, the British made up their mind to shift their capital from Kolkata to Delhi. Before shifting the capital to Delhi, the British wanted to build a huge building there, which would be remembered for centuries. For this, the search for suitable land was started. After much research, the British chose the hills of Raisina for the construction of this building.
The then famous architect Edwin Lutyens was chosen to map this magnificent building for the British Viceroy. He prepared its map. After getting the approval of the map, the work of its construction was started.
It took 17 years instead of four
The target was set for the Viceroy to build the palace in four years, but it took a long time of 17 years to build it. Its construction work was started in 1912, which ended after 17 years in 1929. According to government data, 700 million bricks and 3 million stones were used to build this 340-room building. At the same time, 29 thousand artisans were employed to make this building. Along with the ancient Indian style, there is also a glimpse of Mughal and Western style in Rashtrapati Bhavan.
This tradition continues even today
After independence, this building was known as Government House for two years. In 1950, Rajendra Prasad became the first President of the country. At the same time the Government House was converted into Rashtrapati Bhavan. Rajendra Prasad could not accept the grandeur of Rashtrapati Bhavan and started living in the guestroom. Let us tell you that the tradition of living in the guestroom continues even today. There are about 340 rooms in this building. Its banquet hall can seat 104 people. Let us tell you that it is the second largest residence in the world after the Curanal Palace located in Rome, Italy.

The huge two-ton chandelier in the hall adds to its beauty. Durbar Hall is the most special place of Rashtrapati Bhavan. Lord Mountbat administered the oath to the country’s first Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru on August 15, 1947, in this Durbar Hall. At the same time, on January 26, 1950, the first President of the country, Dr. Rajendra Prasad also took oath in this hall. A special kind of light has been arranged in the banquet hall, which indicates to the butler working here at what time to serve food to the guests and when to remove the plates from in front of them. Now if so many people sit down to eat food, then how will it be known which of them are vegetarian and which are non-vegetarian. To find out, a rose is placed in front of every vegetarian eater.
