Narendra Modi Vs Nitish Kumar: The political discussion regarding 2024 has been on a boom since Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar left the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Many opposition leaders and analysts have started seeing Nitish as the face of the opposition in front of Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the next Lok Sabha election 2024. Sanjay Kumar, co-director of ‘Lokniti’, a research program of ‘Center for the Study of Developing Societies (CSDS)’, spoke to the media on various aspects related to this. He answered many questions.
Question: After the recent political developments in Bihar, any political picture of 2024 seems to be being formed?
Answer: I think there is a lot of rhetoric going on about this. It seems as if a difficult time has come for the BJP and Prime Minister Modi, whereas at present there is nothing like this. It is necessary that it is creating possibilities for the opposition and it is sending a message to the opposition parties that if the BJP and Prime Minister Modi are to be stopped in 2024, they will have to come together.
Question: There are many such leaders in the opposition who are considered as contenders for the post of Prime Minister, how do you see the prospect of Nitish’s candidature in comparison to them?
Answer: If there was a period of 2013-14, then the opposition parties would have easily accepted Nitish as their leader because during that time there was attraction among the people about Nitish, people were seeing his merits. Mamta Banerjee did not have such a big stature at that time. What I mean is that the popularity of many prominent opposition leaders has increased in comparison to Nitish. What goes in Nitish’s favor is that he hails from a Hindi-speaking region, has long political and administrative experience and is free from allegations of corruption and nepotism.
Question: Will Nitish Kumar be the Prime Minister in the event of becoming the face of the opposition? Narendra Modi Can you challenge?
Answer: At present, Nitish Kumar appears weak in comparison to Prime Minister Modi. The reason for this is that while Modi is popular across the country, Nitish’s popularity is currently limited to Bihar or some other Hindi speaking areas. During the last 10 years, the graph of the popularity of the Prime Minister has increased continuously, while the popularity of Nitish has decreased.
It is certain that Nitish’s image is that of an honest leader. He is not from any political family and is not promoting familyism either. In today’s time these things attract the public. It is also a big political capital for Nitish.
Question: Will the opposition parties, especially the Congress, accept Nitish Kumar as the face of the opposition?
Answer: It looks very difficult. It is impossible in the context of Congress. Congress will always advocate that elections should be held and then on the basis of numbers it will be decided who will be the leader. It is impossible for the Congress to accept Nitish as its leader before the elections. Congress is weaker than before but it still has more than 50 seats in Lok Sabha while Nitish has 16 MPs. If it comes to making Nitish the face, there will be a lot of opposition within the Congress.
Question: Does this mean that it is impossible for opposition parties to agree on a single face against Prime Minister Modi?
Answer: I believe that if this opposition party gets involved in choosing the leader, then the leader will never be elected nor coordination will be established. Coordination is necessary, the need for a leader is not so much. If there is no coordination, then the matter of 2024 for the opposition will already be over.
