Pilot Fitness Test: The Directorate General of Civil Aviation of India (DGCA) has allowed transgender pilots to fly aircraft for the first time in the country. Regarding this, Medical Guidelines have been issued on Wednesday. According to this guideline, now transgender pilots can be allowed to fly the plane. At the same time, the Ministry of Civil Aviation has removed the limit imposed on the fare of aircraft. This order will come into effect from August 31.
In fact, India’s first transgender pilot Adam Harry was earlier disqualified by the DGCA to fly the plane. Due to Adam’s efforts, DGCA has had to change its policies. According to the Times of India, Adam Harry has described this decision of DGCA as historic. He said that in countries like America and England, this circular was issued 5 to 6 years ago.
What was said in the issued guideline
The DGCA has said in the guidelines issued on Wednesday that the fitness of a transgender applicant will be assessed by following the principles of assessing his functional ability and risk of disability. It also states that transgender applicants who have received hormone therapy or have undergone gender reassignment surgery within the past five years will be screened for their mental health status.
The guidelines also state that the applicant shall submit a detailed report of the training endocrinologist at the time of applying for the license. This will include the details of the hormone therapy the applicant is going for such as duration of therapy, dosage, changes made, hormone assay report and side effects etc. The guidelines also state that applicants who are undergoing hormone replacement therapy or undergoing gender reassignment surgery will be declared medically unfit for at least three months.
