Finance Minister On Inflation: Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has said that despite global crises like pandemic and Russia-Ukraine war, the Modi government has kept inflation under control to a large extent. He said that the Bloomberg survey has told that the possibility of recession in India is zero. Responding to the discussion on inflation in the Lok Sabha, the Finance Minister said that the government has taken several steps to further reduce inflation. However, dissatisfied with his answer, Congress walked out of the house in the middle of the reply.

The issue which did not allow Parliament to function for two weeks was finally discussed today. Initiating the discussion, Congress MP Manish Tewari, through four lines of a Punjabi poetry, accused the government of failing on the inflation front. He said, ‘You have not even spared the children, you have increased the price of even pencils. Manish Tewari reminded that Sushma Swaraj used to say that tears are coming out of the eyes of housewives. Today that thing is proving to be true. Whatever was left, inflation was killed.

Kakoli Ghosh ate raw brinjal in the house

Taking part in the discussion, TMC MP Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar came up with a unique way to show the inflation of LPG cylinders. Kakoli Ghosh reached the house with a brinjal and ate it during the speech. He said that the Modi government has increased the price of LPG cylinders to more than Rs 1000 per cylinder, due to which cooking is becoming difficult. He said that by eating raw brinjal, I showed that LPG cylinder has become so expensive that one has to eat raw.

‘Zero potential for recession’

So at the same time, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman answered all the allegations of the opposition. Sitharaman said that despite all the difficulties, the government has taken such steps which have kept inflation around 7 percent. Sitharaman said that to keep the prices of pulses and edible oils under control, the government has taken many steps like reducing import duty and it has also benefited.

Countering the allegations of imposition of GST on everyday items like milk and curd, the Finance Minister said that this decision is not of the Modi government but of the GST Council in which the Finance Ministers of all the states are members. Responding to the opposition’s allegations, Nirmala Sitharaman clarified that no GST has been levied on cremation and funeral rites.

Discussion on inflation and less number of opposition

The Congress party was not satisfied with Nirmala Sitharaman’s reply and the party did a walkout in the middle of Sitharaman’s reply. However, no other opposition party supported the Congress in the walkout. However, not many members were present during the debate on behalf of the opposition, who has been demanding a discussion on inflation for two weeks. For example, where only 25 MPs of the opposition were present in the house half an hour before the start of Nirmala Sitharaman’s reply, this number increased slightly to 38 at the time of her reply.
