Bengal Teacher Recruitment Scam: Former West Bengal minister Partha Chatterjee and his aide Arpita Mukherjee were produced in Kolkata’s City Sessions Court today. The court has sent both of them to judicial custody till August 18. Earlier, a special court in Kolkata on Wednesday extended the Enforcement Directorate (ED) custody of former ministers Partha Chatterjee and Arpita Mukherjee till August 5. Today the time of custody of both was over.
Partha Chatterjee along with his aide Arpita Chatterjee was arrested on July 25 in connection with the investigation into the school teacher recruitment case. In today’s hearing, Arpita Mukherjee’s lawyer said that her life is in danger. We want a Division 1 prisoner category for that. His food and water should be tested first and then given to him. ED’s counsel also supported the contention that there is a threat to their security as not more than 4 prisoners can be kept.
On the other hand, Partha Chatterjee’s lawyer said that when the ED raided his house on July 22 in this case, nothing was recovered. If you try to ask someone who is not involved in the crime, he will clearly be uncooperative. While Chatterjee’s counsel moved the bail plea, the ED opposed it, saying “jail custody is required.” Partha Chatterjee’s lawyer said that no one has come forward in this case nor has anyone said that he had demanded a bribe.
In this case, the ED has raided several houses of Arpita Mukherjee and recovered about Rs 50 crore in cash and gold. The ED suspects that this amount is related to the teacher recruitment scam. Partha Chatterjee was the education minister of the state when this alleged scam happened. Partha Chatterjee has said about the recovered cash that that money is not his. Partha Chatterjee has been removed from the Bengal cabinet, while TMC has also suspended him.
