This is the reason that the next destination of this ship moving from the South Pacific Ocean to the Indian Ocean is the Hambantota port of Sri Lanka. Yes… the same Hambantota port that China built and with which the treasury of Sri Lanka became empty due to the burden of debt that started with it. The same Hambantota whose default in repaying the debt, Sri Lanka had to lease its own port to China.

The ship will reach Hambantota port on August 11

The Chinese satellite tracking ship moving from Jiangyin to Hambantota is expected to reach Hambantota port by the afternoon of 11 August 2022 at the current speed.

India’s eye on Chinese ship

Obviously, this mission of Yuan Wang-5 is going to raise questions of concern for India. Hambantota port is just 450 km away from India. Therefore, India is also constantly keeping an eye on this ship. When asked about the Sri Lanka mission of the Chinese naval ship, Indian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Arindam Bagchi said on Thursday that we are aware of the reports regarding the proposed visit of the Chinese ship to Hambantota in August. We will only say that the government keeps a constant watch on all those developments which can have an impact on India’s security and economic interests. At the same time, all necessary steps are taken to protect these interests. This should be clear to everyone about this.

Sri Lanka’s Defense Ministry denied

In the midst of this reaction of India, the news of the arrival of the Chinese ship to Hambantota was denied in the media reports quoting the Sri Lankan Defense Ministry. However, according to the think-tank Belt and Road Initiative Sri Lanka based in Colombo, the Yuan Wang-5 ship on its satellite tracking and control mission in the North-West Indian Ocean will remain in Hambantota from August 11-17.

Actually this ship is a spacecraft tracking vessel. It has the facilities of command, control, communication, computer as well as intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance. That is, this ship can act as a moving command center if needed. Along with this, China can not only conduct intercontinental ballistic missile attacks but can also control anti-satellite missile attacks. According to the Chinese Defense Ministry, the third generation Yuan Wang-5 vessel equipped with spacecraft control capabilities is the backbone of China’s maritime surveillance capabilities. So far this ship has completed missions of 5 lakh 70 thousand nautical miles. China has controlled its Shenzhou Spacecraft, Changye Chandrayaan and Beidou Satellite and Mars Mission through this ship, which spent about 256 days in the sea last year.

Apparently, if Yuan Wang arrives in the Indian Ocean, he will also have an eye on India’s space missions and missile tests. He will try to collect information about them.

China trying to come closer to India

However, this is not the first time that Chinese reconnaissance ships have tried to come close to India. India had tracked two alleged research ships of China in the Indian Ocean and returned them in the midst of East Ladakh tension. Apart from this, in 2019, a Chinese ship Xi Yan-1 was removed from the Indian Exclusive Economic Zone near Andaman and Nicobar. At the same time, in 2014, India expressed its concern about the Sri Lanka Adam of Chinese nuclear submarines and lodged an objection.
