Karnataka Mid Day Meals: In many states of Karnataka, eggs are being given to students under Mid Day Meals. A study conducted by the Government of Karnataka shows that eggs in the mid-day meal help in the development of children. The study revealed that there was significant improvement in the development of children who were given eggs as part of the mid-day meal. Girls of class VIII are 71% more overweight than their peers who were not laid eggs. The study was conducted by the Government of Karnataka covering over 4,500 students in two districts.

This study conducted by the Government of Karnataka states that the introduction of eggs and to some extent bananas in the mid-day meal has led to an improvement in the body mass index (BMI) of both boys and girls.

What is the benefit of eggs in mid day meal?

The study clearly states that serving eggs is helping in the development of school children. This contradicts the report of another Karnataka government committee on National Education Policy, 2020, which said that serving of eggs and meat in mid-day meals can lead to lifestyle disorders. As part of a three-month-long study, between December 2020 and March 2021 on the impact on children’s growth and nutrition, officials served eggs to students, while the people of Gadag were provided regular vegetarian meals with milk.

What is an egg substitute?

There is no previous study on the impact of mid-day meal or any other supplementary nutrition program in the country. The report said the findings underscore the need for additional protein and calories in all districts of Karnataka, especially in the wellness sector. This region is one of the most backward in terms of socio-economic status and education. The report also pointed out that bananas, for all their benefits, cannot be a substitute for eggs.

Who is involved in the Mid Day Meal Study?

A 15-member team from Karnataka State Rural Development and Panchayat Raj University, comprising food scientists, public health experts and economists. The team members monitored the change in average height, average weight and average BMI in the children of Yadgir and Gadag districts. Students from class 1 to 8 participated in it. The report highlights the need for more protein and calories in mid-day meals, especially in districts that do not serve eggs. At present, eggs are served under the Mid Day Meal or PM Poshan Yojana in seven districts of Karnataka.
