The former chief minister and member of the Assam assembly, Sarbananda Sonowal reached his constituency Majuli today to take stock of works on erosion preventive measures being carried out in his constituency. He was also accompanied by Water Resources, Information & Public Relations and Parliamentary Affairs minister Pijush Hazarika, Sports & Youth Welfare minister Bimal Bora and Lok Sabha member Pradan Barua along with other officials.
Sonowal, along with the ministers, visited Missamora, Samguri and Bhakat Chapori to take stock of the departmental work in progress.
He directed the district administration and water resources department to implement necessary measures to prevent soil erosion in the riverbanks of the Brahmaputra at Majuli. Speaking to the media the former chief minister said that Majuli will be made erosion free as envisaged by the government of Assam.
Meanwhile, Water Resource minister Piyush Hazarika also announced a sum of Rs 9 crore to carry out erosion prevention works in a two-kilometre stretch along the riverbank in Missamora at Majuli.
“From what we have seen, at least a 2-kilometre area in Missamora will require protection. We will send a technical team soon after the monsoon to find a permanent approach for the protection of the 2-kilometre area. They have estimated a budget requirement of around Rs 9 crore and I have announced the same. But there should be no compromise with the work. They will be provided with the required fund but I urge for the work to be done properly,” Hazarika said.
