Alva is likely to get around 190-200 votes for her candidature based on the support declared by various parties so far. The Trinamool Congress (TMC) has decided to stay away from the Vice Presidential election. TMC has 23 MPs in Lok Sabha and 16 in Rajya Sabha.

Some regional parties like Telangana Rashtra Samithi and Telugu Desam Party have not yet opened their cards and they may take a decision soon. The ruling Aam Aadmi Party in Delhi and Punjab on Wednesday announced its support to Alva. The party’s political affairs committee unanimously decided to support Alva after a meeting held under the chairmanship of national convener Arvind Kejriwal. The party said, all the Rajya Sabha members of the party will vote for the opposition candidate Margaret Alva on 6 August.
