Sunderlal Bahuguna: Warriors who made lifelong efforts for environmental protection-
Environmentalist and freedom fighter Sunderlal Bahuguna was born on 9 January 1927 in Mardara village on the banks of Bhagirathi river in Tehri district of Uttarakhand. He was a Gandhian environmentalist. He led the ‘Chipko Movement’ peacefully by adopting the principles of non-violence and satyagraha of Mahatma Gandhi and made it successful.
Sunderlal Bahuguna struggled for the protection of forests in the Himalayan region. His efforts for forest conservation got great success when Indira Gandhi got a law passed on his request to provide protection to some forest areas of the Himalayan region. He made many movements as part of efforts to save the environment.
Chipko Movement-
In 1970, in the protest against the cutting of trees through the ‘Chipko Andolan’, people protected them by clinging to the trees. Sunderlal Bahuguna had a major role in this movement. Due to the Chipko movement, he became known worldwide as ‘Triksha Mitra’.
Wife had given the idea of Chipko movement-
The original idea of the Chipko movement was that of Vimla Bahuguna, wife of Sunderlal Bahuguna. Vimla Bahuguna is also an environment lover. He collaborated shoulder to shoulder with Sunderlal Bahuguna for environmental protection.
Movement against Tehri Dam-
Between 1980 and 2004, Sunderlal Sunderlal Bahuguna led an agitation against the construction of Tehri Dam. He made people aware about the negative effects on the environment due to Tehri Dam.
Be active in social work too
Suralal Bahuguna not only worked for the environment but also for social welfare. He also launched a movement to get Dalits to enter the temple. For his contribution to the environment and social sector, Sunderlal Bahuguna was awarded the Padma Shri in 1981 and Padma Vibhushan in 2009 by the government. This great environmental lover passed away in 2021.
