Digital Desk, Kolkata. A special Public Money Laundering Act (PMLA) court, which sent former minister Partha Chatterjee and his aide Arpita Mukherjee to 14-day judicial custody, on Friday allowed Enforcement Directorate officials to interrogate the duo in jail in a related case.

Former minister Partha Chatterjee and his aide Arpita Mukherjee have been sent to judicial custody for two weeks by a court in connection with the multi-crore West Bengal School Service Commission (WBSSC) recruitment scam. The court said that the investigating officers of the ED will talk to the correctional home superintendents and later they will have to allow the officials of the central agency to interrogate Chatterjee and Mukherjee. While Chatterjee has been sent to the Presidency Central Correctional Home, Mukherjee will have to spend two weeks at the Alipore Women’s Correctional Home.

Hearing in the matter, ED’s counsel Firoz Edulji specifically insisted on allowing officials of the central agency to interrogate the duo during their judicial custody. The court also directed the superintendent of the Alipore Women’s Correctional Home, where Mukherjee will be kept, to ensure his complete security during his judicial custody. The concerned prison officer also directed to update the court on the security measures adopted on August 18, when both will be produced again in the same court.

During the hearing, the counsel for both the ED and Mukherjee expressed the apprehension of threat to their lives in jail. While his lawyer demanded to give him the status of first class prisoner. On the other hand, ED’s counsel appealed that the food and liquids given to them should first be examined and then served. Though the court did not specify the status of the first class prisoner, it directed the superintendent of the correctional home concerned to ensure their safety.
