Indian Naval Shipyard: Sunday will be written in golden letters for the indigenous shipbuilding industry. For the first time in the country, a foreign naval ship has reached Chennai for repair. Under an agreement, the US Navy has sent its USNA Charles Drew ship for repairs to the L&T Company’s shipyard at Kattupalli in Chennai.

According to the Defense Ministry, when the USNS Charles Drew arrived at the L&T shipyard, the Defense Secretary himself, Ajay Kumar, the co-chief of the Indian Navy, Vice Admiral SN Ghorpade and US diplomats in India, besides senior officials of the L&T company were also present there. .

US Naval Ship reached India for the first time

This is the first time that a US Navy ship has reached India for repair. According to the Ministry of Defence, today’s event showcases India’s shipbuilding capabilities in the global ship repairing market. Because shipyards of India provide repair and maintenance services of ships at very low cost with advanced maritime technology platform.

Big boost to Make in India

In an official statement, the Defense Ministry said that reaching the shipyard of Charles Drew’s L&T for repairs gives a big boost to Make in India and self-reliance in the defense sector. Apart from this, a new dimension has been added to the strategic relationship between India and America.

Speaking at the reception of the American ship at L&T’s shipyard on Sunday, Defense Secretary Ajay Kumar said that today’s program will be written in golden letters and it has added a new chapter in the relationship between the two countries. Ajay Kumar told that the arrival of Charles Drew to Chennai is an example of India’s mature shipbuilding industry. India’s defense exports have increased by 800 percent in the last 5-6 years. The export which was only 1500 crores in 2014-15, has reached 13 thousand crores in the last year i.e. 2020-21.

How many working naval shipyards in India

Let us tell you that there are currently six private and government shipyards in India with a total turnover of 2 billion dollars and where state-of-the-art ships are manufactured. Goa Shipyard has recently built the country’s first indigenous aircraft and handed it over to the Indian Navy. At present, 39 of the 41 warships of the Indian Navy are being built in indigenous shipyards. Six submarines are under construction with the help of France at Mazagon Dockyard.

Repair will be done for a total of 11 days

L&T CEO, JD Patil told that the Marine Sealift Command of the US Navy has sent its ships here for repair only after conducting a rigorous assessment of India’s shipyards. This has been made possible by world class modern infrastructure at Kattupalli Shipyard. Charles Drew will be at Kattupalli for repairs and allied services for the next 11 days.
