China Taiwan Conflict: There are two Chinas on the world map. One big and one small. The younger one is afraid that the bigger one will attack China and merge it with itself. Because of this, small China has warned the citizens of its country and by printing a 28-page booklet, things like to do and not to do. The name of this small China is Republic of China, which is called Taiwan in common language. And the bigger one is the People’s Republic of China, which is called China in common language. What is the quarrel between them and how China has been trying to take over Taiwan since 1949, let us try to understand it in a sequential manner and try to understand that such a small island is the world’s largest island. How is it so important that even a country like America is ready to confront China for this.

This story starts from the year 1945. In 1945, when the US dropped atomic bombs on two Japanese cities, Nagasaki and Hiroshima, the Second World War ended. With this, the emperorship of Japan also ended. And China became a free country. At that time Taiwan also became a part of China. The name of the country was Republic of China. But then a fight started between the two parties to capture the power of China. The old party was the Nationalist Kuomintang, whose leader Sun Yat Sen is considered the first president of China, who became president in 1912. And the other party was the Communist Party of China. The leader of the Kuomintang was Chiang Kai-shek. The leader of the Communist Party was Mao Zedong. In the battle between these two for power, the leader of the Communist Party of China, Mao-Tse Tung, won. After the defeat, Kuomintang leader Chiang Kai-shek moved to Taiwan, the sea area near China. Going to Taiwan, Chiang Kai-shek said that we are declaring Taiwan independent and naming it Republic of China. At the same time, the country under Mao-Tse Tung’s control was named People’s Republic of China.

When China was not so powerful

The fight between China and Taiwan starts from here. Even at that time, Mao wanted China to annex Taiwan. But Taiwan is an area surrounded by the sea. And in 1949, China did not have such a navy that it would go through the sea and fight the war with Taiwan and join it with itself. But sporadic fighting continued. China continued to increase its power. And then by 1971, the power of China increased so much that the People’s Republic of China, that is, China, was recognized as a country in the United Nations. And from here Taiwan started to weaken, because now it also stopped getting the help of the UN. By then the power of China had also changed. After Mao’s death, Deng Xiaoping had become China’s most powerful leader. Due to reformist economic policies, a large section of China had mobilized in favor of Deng Xiaoping.

China signed a trade deal with America

With Deng coming to power, China opened its markets to the world. January 1, 1979 was the date when China officially entered into a trade agreement with the US. America also needed a bigger market. Jimmy Carter used to be the US President then. He said that the People’s Republic of China led by Deng Xiaoping is the only real country. Jimmy Carter closed his embassy built in the Republic of China ie Taiwan. With American help, China’s spirits also increased and then Deng Xiaoping again threatened Taiwan to keep its army under control and merge itself with China.

When the DPP party was established

At that time, Chiang Chiang Kuo used to be the Premier of the Republic of China or say Taiwan. He was the son of former Taiwan Premier Chiang Kai-shek. He did not respond to China’s proposal. China didn’t say anything either. He just kept on increasing his power. At the same time, 1986 was the year in the history of Taiwan, when another party was established. The name of that party was DPP. Full name Democratic Progressive Party. The aim was to protect human rights as well as maintain Taiwanese identity. He said that Taiwan is not a part of China, but a free country. The DPP raised the issue vigorously during the 1990-91 elections in Taiwan. But she could not win the election.

In the year 2000, the power came in the hands of DPP.

In 1992, representatives of China and Taiwan met in Hong Kong. There was talk of trying to restore peace. But the agreement could not be finalised. Relations between China and Taiwan continued to deteriorate. But by 2000, everything changed. The power of Taiwan fell into the hands of the DPP. And the DPP had to clearly say that it is a free country separate from China. This angered China and started mobilization all over the world against Taiwan. In 2004, the command of Taiwan again passed to the Kuomintang and Lian Zhan became president. Chinese President Hu Jintao met Taiwan’s new President Lien Zhan in 2005. But no final agreement could be reached. The battle between China and Taiwan continued like this.

Taiwanese people want independence from China

There has been a big change in Taiwan’s stance since 2016. With DPP leader Tsai Ing-wen becoming president, Taiwan has started taking a stand against China. Now the people of Taiwan openly want independence from China. He rejects his threats. And this is what repeatedly incites China to attack Taiwan. Although China has not launched any attack yet, but the terror of China’s attack remains intact. And that is why the government of Taiwan has issued a booklist of what to do and what not to do in case of war.

importance of taiwan

What is the importance of Taiwan. So even today, there are only 14 countries in the world, which recognize Taiwan as a separate independent country. And these 14 countries are also such, which have to be searched by putting a lens on the map. For example, Guatemala, Honduras, Haiti, Paraguay, Nicaragua, Eswatini, Tualu, Nauru. All of them are members of the United Nations and recognize Taiwan as a separate country. But there is no such great importance or power of these countries in geopolitics that on their behest, other countries of the world can come with Taiwan.

Why Taiwan is necessary for every country?

But hardly any country in the world can separate itself from what is in Taiwan. Today, Taiwan is such a country, which has more than half the production of chips used in computers to mobiles and vehicles. Apart from Taiwan, South Korea is the only country where large quantities of chips are made, but the productivity of South Korea is very low ahead of Taiwan. Now without computers, without mobiles and without vehicles, even the present cannot be imagined, leave the future alone. Therefore, Taiwan has become essential for every country in the world. And this is the reason that even though Taiwan is not getting official recognition under the pressure of China, but there are about 60 countries of the world that have unofficially maintained diplomatic relations with Taiwan and these include America, Britain, France, Germany. Countries like Russia and India are also included.

Now America also stands with Taiwan

The rest, Taiwan is a rapidly developing economy. This country, with a population of about 23 million, has developed itself so much in spite of all the restrictions of China that America, which had chosen China instead of Taiwan in the 70s, is now fighting China to save Taiwan. ready to fight. America is the only powerful country that has openly supported Taiwan to reduce China’s power. From providing weapons to Taiwan’s military to standing firmly with its military, America is at the forefront, and all this has happened under that 1979 agreement, which is called the Taiwan Relations Act 1979. And the same thing does not suit China at all.

In this way, China-US relations deteriorated

China’s relations with the US began to deteriorate when the Chinese army massacred its own civilians at Tiananmen Square in China to stop the protests in China. Then America started winding up its business relations with China. America’s big investors came against China and they refused to invest in China. America also announced to impose many strict sanctions on China. In 1991, the Soviet Union broke up. The Cold War ended and America became the undisputed superpower of the world. But China was also continuously increasing its power and that too had moved towards becoming the world’s superpower. In such a situation, in order to influence the elections to be held in Taiwan in 1996 and to intimidate Taiwan, China conducted a major missile test on the Taiwan border. This angered the then US President Bill Clinton and he raised his army in the Pacific Ocean in support of Taiwan. Although even then Bill Clinton had clearly said that he does not recognize a separate Taiwan country. Those two are not even recognizing China and they are also opposing China to attack Taiwan and merge it into itself.

Relations deteriorated after Barack Obama became president

However, Clinton tried her best to improve trade relations with China. He himself went to China. There he met people, met leaders and again the US-China business started. But then America made a mistake. Based on a false report by Military Intelligence, the US bombed the Chinese embassy in Belgrade, killing several Chinese journalists and officials. This was the incident of May 1999, on which US President Bill Clinton also apologized. And the result was that after a few months, the relationship between America and China started improving again. After Bill Clinton, relations between America and China remained fine even when George W Bush was the President. But with Barack Obama becoming the President, relations between America and China started deteriorating.

Agreement to sell war weapons with Taiwan

Barack Obama also visited China for three days in November 2009 after becoming president. But when he returned from there, in the beginning of 2010, he made an agreement to sell war weapons to Taiwan for about half a billion dollars. This angered China. Taiwan was China’s sore spot, so it announced the imposition of sanctions on America. Things got worse when Obama met the Buddhist religious leader, the Dalai Lama. Tibet was another weak vein of China, so it provoked China even more.

Enmity with China increased after the arrival of Donald Trump

But then China and America came together again to stop North Korea’s growing nuclear programs. It seemed that the ice on the relationship would melt completely. Obama even supported China’s One China policy, in which Taiwan is considered part of China. Obama also accepted Tibet as part of China. But then in 2017 Trump came to power. And by starting talks with Taiwan, he made China his enemy. Trump was the first US President since 1979 to have spoken to the President of Taiwan. This completely provoked China. Corona who came out of China did the right thing, against which Trump took an open front and made China his enemy.

Taiwan on the South China Sea

And from the point of view of geopolitics, Taiwan is in the South China Sea. China claims its possession of the entire South China Sea. There are also reserves of natural oil and gas in this entire area, which other countries of the world want to occupy. But China is an obstacle in their path. At the same time, America says that China has no right to block the sea route passing through the South China Sea and the countries of the world are free to do their business through this route. This is the route through which about a third of the world’s maritime trade is done.

China America also face to face in Russia-Ukraine war

Now China and America have their own claims and to strengthen these claims, both the countries keep their army stationed in this area at all times, due to which there is a possibility of constant war. And in this, the war between Russia and Ukraine has worked as fuel in the fire. In the attack by Russia on Ukraine, China is directly standing with Russia and justifying it. Because China feels that just as Ukraine was formed after separating from Russia and now Russia is trying to get it back, China can also get Taiwan. Russia has already been saying that Taiwan is not a country, but a part of China and it should be occupied by China. And America has been an old enemy of Russia, so America is rejecting this claim of Russia. America’s relations with China have deteriorated. In such a situation, America is troubled by the growing friendship between China and Russia on the pretext of Taiwan and Ukraine. The rest is also a matter of fact that the new US President Joe Biden has also said that if China attacks Taiwan, America will fully help Taiwan and in such a situation, Taiwan is in front of the world divided into two factions due to Ukraine war. As another crisis is deepening, where in the event of China attacking Taiwan, the world will again be divided into two factions and this could be like the start of the Third World War. So this was the whole story of that small country of Taiwan, which may be recognized by only 14 countries of the world, but because of that a big war can break out in the whole world.
