Taslima Nasreen on Salman Rushdie: Famous writer Salman Rushdie was attacked by a man during a program in New York, USA on Friday. Rushdie, 75, born in Mumbai and a Booker Prize winner, was about to begin his lecture at an event at the Shuttowqua Institute in western New York when a man stepped onto the stage and punched or stabbed Rushdie. He was being introduced in the program at that time.

Writer Taslima Nasreen has expressed concern about the attack on Rushdie. He tweeted, “I just learned that Salman Rushdie has been attacked in New York. I am really shocked. I never thought that this would happen. He is living in the West and is being protected since 1989. If they are attacked, anyone who criticizes Islam can be attacked. I’m worried.”

New York police statement

New York Police say Salman Rushdie has been attacked on the neck on stage. He was taken by helicopter and admitted to the hospital. In a video posted online, attendees can be seen running towards the stage soon after the incident. It is said that the people present there caught the attacker.

According to eyewitnesses at the scene, Rushdie fell on the stage and was seen with blood on his hands. Rushdie was treated on stage after the attack.

Rushdie’s controversial book “The Satanic Verses” has been banned in Iran since 1988. Many Muslims believe that Rushdie has committed blasphemy through this book. In this regard, the then supreme religious leader of Iran, Ayatollah Ruhollah Khamenei, issued a fatwa for the death penalty for Rushdie. A reward of more than US$3 million was also offered for the person who killed Rushdie.
