Supreme Court Verdict 24 Week Pregnancy Plea: The Supreme Court has sought a report from AIIMS on the safe abortion of a girl who is 24 weeks pregnant. In its order, the court said that a team of two experts should be formed today, who should report whether abortion is possible without harming the girl or not. Explain that under the MTP Act, abortion is allowed only up to 20 weeks. On this basis, the Delhi High Court had dismissed the petition. The woman had become pregnant due to a consensual relationship.
Let us tell you that an unmarried woman had sought permission for abortion in the Supreme Court to abort the 24-week-old fetus in her stomach. The court had agreed to consider the woman’s petition. Earlier on July 16, a Delhi High Court bench, in its order, had refused permission to an unmarried woman to abort a 23-week-old fetus. The High Court was of the view that under the Abortion Act, abortion beyond 20 weeks is not allowed in the direction of consensual sex.
Petitioner woman gave this argument
Let us tell you that the petitioner woman, 25, had become pregnant at 24 weeks on 18 July. She told the court that she had completed 24 weeks of pregnancy on 18 July. At the same time, she also told the court that her partner had refused to marry her even though they had consensual relations. The woman argued that if a child is given birth without marriage, it will cause mental agony and social stigma along with it.
