Operation Vijay: Who can forget the Kargil War, on 26 July 1999, our brave soldiers successfully carried out Operation Vijay in this war and hoisted the tricolor on 5140 hill in Dras Sector of Kargil. . To celebrate the same glorious victory of the brave soldiers, the Indian Army has taken an important step. The Army has now renamed Point 5140 Hill of Dras Sector as ‘Gun Hill’ in memory of the decisive role of Bofors-like artillery and gunners in the victory of Kargil war.

In fact, Point 5140 in Dras has been named as Gun Hill to pay tribute to the supreme sacrifice of the Gunners and Soldiers in Operation Vijay in Kargil Sector. On behalf of the artillery regiment, Lt Gen TK Chawla, Director General of Artillery laid wreath along with the veteran gunners who participated in the operation at the Kargil War Memorial in Drass. Lt Gen Anindya Sengupta, General Officer Commanding, Fire and Fury Corps also laid the wreath on the occasion.

The ceremony was held in the presence of all the seniors of the Artillery Regiment, who received the title of Kargil in Operation Vijay. Serving officers of the Gunner fraternity were also present on the occasion. It is noteworthy that in 1999, Pakistan attacked Kargil, in which 527 brave soldiers sacrificed their lives and hoisted the tricolor at Point 5140 and declared their victory. This war of Kargil lasted for about 2 months at an altitude of 18 thousand feet, in which more than 1300 soldiers were injured in this war.
