She won a silver medal in Glasgow in 2014 and then won a silver medal in the 49kg category at the 2021 Tokyo Olympic Games. She is the first woman to win a gold medal and a silver medal in weightlifting for India.

Journey started with a wooden bundle, won gold today

Saikhom Mirabai Chanu was born on 8 August 1994 in Imphal, the capital of Manipur, India’s north eastern state. His mother’s name is Saikohan Ungbi Tombi Lima, who is a shopkeeper by profession. At the same time, his father’s name is Psychoham Kriti Meitei who works in the PWD department. Mirabai Chanu was interested in weightlifting since her childhood days. At the age of 12, she used to practice picking up thick bundles of wood. Chanu, who dreams of weightlifting, has proved today that with hard work and dedication, the biggest can be achieved.

Inspired by Kunjurani Devi

In Meera’s house, food was cooked on a wooden stove and she had to bring wood from the forest. Chanu used to easily lift even those big bundles which her brother could hardly lift. Mira Bai was inspired by the female weightlifter Kunjurani Devi. Kunjurani was also from Manipur and had played in the Athens Olympics. Seeing him, Meera also asked her family members to make a career in weightlifting. At first everyone got angry and everyone refused but in the end they had to bow down to Meera’s insistence.

The first medal was won in 2014, history was created

Mira Bai Chanu won her first Commonwealth Games medal in the year 2014 by winning silver in the 48 kg weight category in Glasgow. Then she was unsuccessful in Rio Olympics 2016. But two years later, he made a comeback with a gold medal at the 2017 World Championships. He created history by winning a gold medal at the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games 2018. But her real test came at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021 when she returned from her previous Olympic debacle to win a silver and became the first Indian weightlifter to win a silver medal. She is the second weightlifter in the country to win a medal at the Olympics after Karnam Malleswari, who won a bronze medal at the Sydney Olympics 2000.
