Karkardooma Court: The Karkardooma Court will hear today in the case of alleged attack on Sharjeel Imam, accused in the Delhi riots case and former JNU student. In this case, the Tihar Jail authorities have given their report including the CCTV footage before the court to the court. The video of the CCTV footage could not play before the court due to some reason.
Imam had recently alleged that the assistant superintendent of Tihar Jail along with eight to 10 people assaulted him in his cell on June 30. They reportedly called him a terrorist and a traitor. The Karkardooma Court will give its verdict on the interim bail of Sharjeel Imam, accused in the sedition case. After the direction of the Supreme Court, he had approached the court for relief in the sedition case.
‘Deserves to get Sharjeel’s bail’
Sharjeel Imam’s lawyer Ahmed Ibrahim told the court that there are several cases going on against his client, mainly related to speeches, which are the subject of criminal investigation. He made his stand on the bail of Sharjeel Imam, saying that he is entitled to bail as there is no possibility of his escape, nor is there a risk of influencing witnesses or tampering with evidence. As far as the allegation under Section 13 of the UAPA is concerned, Sharjeel in his speeches has not done anything to incite violence or violent activities.
What are the charges against Sharjeel Imam
Sharjeel Imam is accused of making inflammatory speeches against the government on the Citizenship (Amendment) Act and the National Register of Citizens (NRC). Violence allegedly took place in the area outside the university, especially in December 2019 Jamia Millia Islamia University. Apart from this, Sharjeel has been accused of sedition for his alleged inflammatory speeches. Sharjeel is in judicial custody since January 2020.
