Monkeypox Vaccine: The central government has floated a tender to make monkeypox vaccine. Sources said that ICMR has invited Expression of Interest (EoI) from experienced vaccine manufacturers, pharma companies, research and development institutions and in-vitro diagnostic (IVD) kit manufacturers for joint collaboration in vaccine development and testing kits.
So far there have been four cases of monkeypox in the country. Three of these cases have come to Kerala and one case has been confirmed in Delhi.
ICMR isolated monkeypox virus
The Pune-based National Institute of Virology (NIV) under the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has isolated monkeypox virus from a patient’s sample, which could help in making test kits and vaccines against the disease.
NIV Senior Scientist Dr. Pragya Yadav said that isolating the virus enhances India’s ability to conduct research and development in many other directions
He told PTI-language, “The recent outbreak has affected many countries, leading to a worrying situation, which is due to the West African nature, which is less severe than the Congolese pattern that came before. The cases reported in India are also less serious and related to West African nature.
Adar Poonawalla’s statement
Regarding the vaccine, Serum Institute of India (SII) CEO Adar Poonawalla said on Tuesday that he is in talks with Danish company Bavarian Nordic to import some consignments of vaccines.
Poonawalla had said that in the event of an agreement, it would take two to three months to import the vaccines into the country. He said that since only a few cases of monkeypox have been reported in the country so far, SII will have to wait for some time to assess the demand situation and development of the vaccine at the local level.
