Assam Minister for Water Resources Pijush Hazarika gave away cheques to women loan borrowers under Assam Micro Finance Incentive and Relief Scheme 2021 (AMFIRS) in Khanapara on Friday. As per the scheme, borrowers who regularly pay back with ‘Zero Days Past Due’ would get a one-time incentive payment of Rs 25,000 or the outstanding amount. Around 36,000 beneficiaries were present to receive their share of the amount at the function. However, several women were dissatisfied with the amount they finally received.
Kiron Kalita, one of the beneficiaries, said, “We were told by Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma that we’ll get Rs 25,000. But now after receiving the cheque, I got to know that it is only Rs 8,629. What is the reason?”
Another beneficiary, Moni Murari, expressed disappointment in not getting her cheque despite her name being on the beneficiary list.
“I was asked to come to Khanapara to collect my cheque. I have seen my name on the beneficiary list but when I went to counter no. 42 there was no cheque in my name,” Murari said.
The ambitious AMFIRS scheme by the Assam chief minister came in a bid to fulfil a major poll promise.
